I couldn't resist a cheeky Simpson's quote for the title! A while ago I wrote a post about a comic called Lumberjanes that I'm really enjoying at the moment. Following that, a friend of mine suggested I take a look at her local (ish) comic book shop, Page 45's website as they have a feature where you can fill out a form and they'll email you with some recommendations. Sometime last week I finally remembered to fill out the form, they ask you about comics you enjoy as well as books, TV shows, films, and so on, and base their recommendations on your answers. I got a response really quickly brimming with recommendations for a range of things, all of which I was excited to try. I placed an order via their website and within a few days my parcel arrived!
The Wicked + The Divine was recommended for the kick-ass female characters (of which there are plenty). Having read the first issue, I'm itching for more. It has everything; goddesses, pop music and intrigue. I can't wait to see what happens in the next issue.
These three mini stories by Becky Cloonan were recommended because I mentioned my love for Game of Thrones. These definitely have a Thrones-esque feel to them. They are beautifully drawn and the stories themselves are just wonderful. It's hard to choose a favourite, but I think Demeter stood out to me as I loved the ocean theme. It's amazing how invested I got with the characters in such short stories, I found myself genuinely feeling for all of them.
They also recommended I take a look at the work of John Allison, which is my next port of call when I get paid, as well as Bryan K. Vaughan's 'Saga'. James actually already has 'Saga' so I will be borrowing from him shortly. I really can't recommend Page 45 enough, they're really friendly and they know what they're talking about. I'm hoping I'll be able to visit Nottingham again soon and when I do I'll definitely be making a trip to the shop.
